Ethan threw a ball for Dino, praising him when he brought it back. The dog never tired of the game, and Ethan, feeling guilty for not being able to play with him much with everything going on, continued to throw until Dino ran off to the stream to get a drink. Ethan followed him, although he drank from his bottle of water. He flopped down on the ground under a tree.

The garden was weeded and watered. The goats moved to a new pasture to take advantage of the long grass there, where a metal trough provided plenty of water. Ethan couldn’t believe it, but he was bored and wanted something to do. He couldn’t believe he actually had the luxury of being bored. Before the virus, he’d hop on the computer or play a video game when he was bored. Right now, even if he could, the idea of sitting in front of a screen didn’t appeal to him. He snapped his fingers and patted the ground beside him until Dino lay next to him, panting and dripping water from his mouth. Ethan laughed and ruffled the dog’s fur.

“Ethan!”

Standing, Ethan turned to see Jalen waving to him, beckoning him.

After loping across the back pasture, Dino matching his pace, Ethan reached Jalen and stopped, only slightly winded. “What’s up?”

“My dad wants to show us all something.”

“All?”

“Well, you, me, and I guess Ruby and the other kid.”

“Luke?”

Jalen shrugged as if the kid’s name didn’t matter.

“What’s he want to show us?” Ethan walked beside Jalen as they went to wherever his dad waited.

“I don’t know. He said it’s a surprise.”

Once they were assembled, Dexter took them to the back of Noah’s truck. “I saw these the other day on our way to the blueberry farm but only just had a chance to get a few of them.” He pulled a blue tarp from the top of whatever lay in the bed of the truck.

Ethan squinted. He thought he knew what they were, but he wasn’t certain. “Are these solar panels?”

“Bingo! Give the boy a prize.”

“What are we gonna do with them?” Ethan leaned over the side of the truck and ran a finger down one of the panels.

“I’m thinking wouldn’t it be awesome to have electricity this winter? We can get some space heaters and keep the house nice and warm. Maybe even get an electric oven and have something decent to cook on. Oh, and hot water.”

The heaters and stove Ethan thought he could do without. The farmhouse had two fireplaces, and he envisioned living like they did in the olden days. But running hot water? That, he was down for.

“No way!” Jalen nudged Ethan. “Maybe we can find a game console. Oh, and a TV with a DVD player. There’s gotta be thousands of DVDs around someplace.”

Luke looked between Jalen and Ethan, his eyes wide with hope. Ethan looked away without giving him any and nodded to Jalen. Although he wasn’t nearly as excited about those things as he would have been a few months ago, he pretended to feel excitement.
